The detachment is named in honor of Colonel James M. Slay, a distinguished Marine officer whose service and sacrifice exemplify the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps.

Colonel Slay's legacy lives on through the men and women of this detachment, who carry forward his commitment to God, Country, and Corps in the Richmond, Virginia community.

The Marine Corps League

"Once a Marine, Always a Marine."

The Marine Corps League was founded in 1923 and chartered by Congress in 1947. It is the only federally chartered Marine Corps organization in the United States. The League unites Marines who share the common bond of having served their country as members of the United States Marine Corps.

The League's objectives are to preserve the traditions and promote the interests of the United States Marine Corps, to band together those who are now serving in the United States Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged from that service, to assist in creating a favorable opinion of the Marine Corps, and to promote the ideals of American freedom and democracy.

Our Detachment

The James M. Slay Detachment #329 is the oldest Marine Corps League detachment in Virginia, proudly serving the Richmond metropolitan area. Our members include active duty Marines, veterans, and family members who share a deep commitment to the Marine Corps and the communities we serve.

We are incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(4) Veterans Service Organization. Our detachment is active in community service, veterans' support, youth programs, and patriotic observances throughout the Richmond area.

The Marine Corps League and the James M. Slay Detachment are not part of, or endorsed by, the United States Marine Corps. The name, emblem, and trademarks of the United States Marine Corps are used with permission.

What We Do

Honor Guard

We provide a professional Honor Guard for funerals, ceremonies, and patriotic events throughout the Richmond area.

Color Guard

Our Color Guard presents the Colors at civic events, sporting events, and community gatherings with pride and precision.

Community Service

We actively support veterans, active duty service members, and their families through outreach and assistance programs.

Scholarship Program

The Sergeant Bruce Heilman Scholarship supports deserving students in the Richmond community.

Shooting Sports

We promote safe and responsible firearms use through organized shooting events at local ranges.

Veterans Support

We advocate for veterans' rights and benefits, and provide camaraderie and support for those who have served.
